Height from the top line to the baseline.

Trace style

Fading rows get lighter row by row. Yellow works like tracing over a highlighter.

Tracing darkness

Printed too faint? Pick Dark.

Starting dots

A green dot shows where each letter or number starts, and the arrow shows which way the first stroke goes. Works on traced letters and numbers.

Letter spacing

More space between letters helps writers who crowd them together.

Orientation

Landscape gives longer rows.

Line weight
Highlighted writing band

Shades the space between the dashed line and the baseline on 3- and 4-line paper. Sky, grass, ground colors the top, middle and tail spaces.

For example: Trace each word, then write it on your own.

How to make a letter tracing worksheet

  1. Tick the letters you want, or choose a stroke family to select a group that shares the same first stroke.
  2. Pick Pairs, Capitals or Lowercase, and print or slanted print.
  3. Set the tracing and blank rows, then print. Each letter gets its own block of rows.

Why group letters by stroke?

Many handwriting teachers introduce letters in groups that start with the same movement instead of in A to Z order. The curve letters c, o, a, d, g and q all begin with the same counterclockwise curve, for example. Practicing them together means the hand repeats one movement many times. Grouping also separates letters that are easy to mix up: d starts with the c-curve, while b starts with a straight line down, so practicing them in different groups keeps the two starts apart. That reasoning is this site's own, not a published curriculum.

The family groups here are a practical starting set, not a fixed rule. Change any selection to suit your child.

Starting dots. Turn on Starting dots to show a green dot where each letter begins, with an optional arrow for the direction of the first stroke. Schools teach slightly different stroke orders, so if your child's class starts a letter somewhere else, follow the class.

Words that start with the letter. The word row adds a short, easy word for each letter, such as apple for a and sun for s, so the letter is practiced inside a word. Few English words start with x, so x uses fox, where the x comes at the end.

Example: a curve letter page

A parent whose child keeps reversing b and d picks the Curve family, switches Letter case to Lowercase, and sets three dotted tracing rows. The page practices c, o, a, d, g, q, e and s, so the d is learned as a curve letter, separate from b, which is a hump letter.

For a younger child, a kindergarten set built from these letters keeps the lines big and the choices simple.

Questions people ask

Can I make tracing sheets for only a few letters?

Yes. Tick any letters you want. The worksheet only includes the letters you select.

What do Pairs, Capitals and Lowercase mean?

Pairs puts the capital and lowercase letter side by side, like Aa. Capitals and Lowercase practice one form only.

What are stroke families?

Groups of letters that begin with the same movement, such as curve letters (c, o, a, d, g, q). Practicing them together repeats one motion.

Is there a cursive version?

Yes. Use the cursive alphabet worksheets for cursive letter practice.

Which trace style is best for beginners?

Dotted letters at a large line size are a common starting point. If the dots print too faintly, switch to Gray or set the darkness to Dark. Fading makes each row lighter than the one before, so the last rows give less help.

Do the letters show where to start writing?

Yes, if you want them to. Set Starting dots to Dots, or Dots and arrows. A green dot marks where each letter's first stroke starts, and the arrow shows which way it goes.

Can I make a letter tracing booklet?

Yes. Turn on One letter per page. Each letter gets its own page, so you can print a set and staple it. A full A to Z booklet is 26 pages.
