How to make a cursive worksheet

  1. Choose what to practice: letter joins, single words, sentences or a short paragraph.
  2. Pick traditional or modern cursive. Turn on slant guides if you want help keeping a steady lean.
  3. Set the line size and the number of tracing and blank rows, then print.

How to use these sheets well

Joins first, then words. Cursive gets easier once the common connections feel automatic. The joins list covers frequent English letter pairs such as th, he and in. Practice those before moving on to full sentences.

Traditional or modern? Traditional cursive has the loops many US schools taught for decades. Modern cursive keeps the joins but drops some loops, which gives it a simpler look. For what studies say about speed and legibility, see print vs cursive. Pick the one your child is learning at school, or the one you want your own writing to look like.

Slant guides. The light diagonal lines show a steady forward lean. Letters do not need to match the lines exactly. They are a reference so every letter leans the same way.

Your own joins. The built-in joins list covers the most common pairs. If one connection keeps going wrong, such as br, ow or the hard joins after o and w, type just those pairs in Your own joins and drill them.

Copy mode. Once tracing feels easy, turn on Copy mode. Each line prints once in solid letters, followed only by blank rows, so the writer copies without a guide to follow. Fading rows (under Trace style) are a halfway step between the two.

Ready-made text. Start from fills the box with pangrams, short sentences, the days, the months, two old proverbs or the classic chicken riddle, so there is always something to practice.

New to cursive? The step-by-step guide to writing in cursive covers letter groups, the four kinds of joins and a practice routine.

Example: a joins page

An adult relearning cursive sets Practice to Letter joins, picks Modern, uses 1/2 in lines and two tracing rows. They print the joins sheet once, then switch to Sentences and type a short quote to practice the next day.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between traditional and modern cursive?

Traditional cursive uses more loops and flourishes, like the style many US schools taught in the past. Modern cursive keeps letters connected but simplifies some shapes, which many people find quicker to write.

Can I type my own words for cursive practice?

Yes. Pick Words, Sentences or Paragraph, then type anything in the box. Joins uses a built-in list of common letter pairs unless you type your own pairs in Your own joins.

What are slant guide lines?

Light diagonal lines drawn across each row to show a consistent forward lean. Many people use them to keep their cursive letters at the same angle.

Is there a cursive alphabet chart?

Yes. The cursive alphabet page prints an A to Z chart of capital and lowercase letters, plus practice pages for any letters you pick.

Are the cursive letters shown with stroke arrows?

For single lowercase letters, yes. Set Starting dots to Dots and arrows. Letters joined inside a word change shape, so they don't get dots. For a chart of every lowercase starting point, use the cursive alphabet page.

Can I practice my own letter joins?

Yes. Pick Letter joins, then type the pairs you want in Your own joins, separated by spaces. Leave it empty to use the built-in list.
